Dr. Mitra Shokrollahi is a PhD-trained scientist with a distinguished multidisciplinary background spanning molecular genetics, DNA repair, cancer biology, translational pharmacology, and gastrointestinal physiology. Her scientific approach is rooted in systems thinking, precision medicine, and interdisciplinary biology, integrating knowledge across fields to uncover biological relationships that may not be apparent through conventional product development or investment due diligence. This perspective enables her to translate complex biomedical science into meaningful strategic insights that support research, biotechnology, and digital health innovation.

Built on Scientific Foundations

Dr. Shokrollahi’s career has been driven by a longstanding commitment to deciphering the biological mechanisms underlying human disease. Her doctoral studies in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto led to the discovery of DNA double-strand break-capturing nuclear envelope tubules (dsbNETs), a previously unrecognized DNA repair mechanism advancing our understanding of genome stability with important implications for cancer biology and aging. She first elucidated this mechanism and characterized the pathway through cell and molecular biology techniques, alongside the development of custom analytical approaches that enabled its discovery. Her work provided the initial mechanistic definition of dsbNETs and established their role in DNA repair. The research subsequently expanded into a broader collaborative effort involving multiple laboratories and contributors. This discovery was published in the high-impact journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, received multiple awards, resulted in an international patent application, and was featured on major scientific news platforms, including ScienceDaily and EurekAlert! (AAAS).

Her earlier graduate research explored receptor-mediated signalling pathways in the gastrointestinal tract, contributing key insights toward the development of safer, targeted therapeutics. This profound breadth of expertise enables her to connect ideas across traditionally separate fields, recognize emerging clinical opportunities, evaluate biomedical assets with scientific rigor, and approach complex scientific questions from a broader biological perspective.
